Job Summary:

Under general supervision, the Phlebotomist I performs venipuncture and specified test to obtain specimens; receive specimens, review labeling check condition of specimens and distribute, perform clerical work; and perform other duties as required. No moderate or complex testing is performed by this position. Maintains high ethical standards. The Phlebotomist I differs from the Laboratory Assistant and/or Medical Technician in that the Lab Assistant and/or Medical Technician spends the majority of time analyzing specimens and preparing specimens and/or reagents for testing while in the laboratory while the Phlebotomist I spends the majority of time obtaining specimens and processing such related data. Collection of blood samples by venipuncture and finger sticks on patients of varied ages who may be carriers of infectious agents or who may be hostile or unstable; receive specimens from patients and staff, check for condition and necessary information, and distribute specimens to the appropriate staff or processing for send outs; Placing unclotted, nonhemolyzed, full purple top CBC specimens only (pedi tops and short draws will be given to the Med Tech directly) on a Sysmex XN 2000 rack and place on the Sysmex XN 2000 analyzer; be able to operate centrifuges to spin blood; greet patients and obtain information from patients as needed to complete collection of any specimens. Complete requisitions and specimen site batches, maintain a clean, well-stocked phlebotomy room; enter test information into the computer and search computer files; answer phone and direct calls; and perform related clerical tasks. Responsible for the collection of all blood draw in ER, outpatient, ICU, 2nd floor, day surgery and all other areas as needed. They must have a positive attitude and always use the required two (2) patient identifier systems for identification of all patients. The Phlebotomist I will assist other phlebotomist, Lab Assistants and/or Medical Technicians as needed, in difficult collections, and/or difficult issues. The Phlebotomist I will direct any issues or problems to a Phlebotomist III and/or Medical Technician/Technologist on shift and/or supervisor. They will follow universal precautions on all duties of the job, follow the requirements and use proper techniques involved in the care and use of equipment. They will have some knowledge of the fundamentals of medical laboratory work, laboratory equipment and terminology; also they are aware of the possible dangers of harmful bacteria and communicable disease. Will perform other duties as assigned or as needed, within reasonable expectations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school degree or equivalent; any combination of education and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying, unless otherwise specified. Prefer completion of a specialized phlebotomy training program.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY:

Phlebotomy Technician Certification by ASCP (PBT) or AMT (PBT) or equivalent approved certifications is highly recommended but not required.

EXPERIENCE:

Requires 6 months of phlebotomy experience (can include training program).

Prefer one year of phlebotomy experiences; Maintains education and development appropriate for position. This documentation must be reviewed and approved by the Director of the laboratory prior to patient testing
