Matagorda Regional medical Center Auxiliary had its beginning in the year 1958, when a need for hospital volunteer workers became apparent. Numerous trips were made to visit hospitals in Houston, where the founding members met with already-established auxiliaries. However, it wasn’t until 1960 that the auxiliary was formed under the urging of Mrs. Helen Cowart and Mrs. Rose Cannon. The first recorded minutes of the organization were taken at a meeting on December 5, 1960 in the Service Center at 9:30am. The presiding officer was Mrs. Helen Cowart.
The auxiliary constitution was written and approved by the Hospital Board. The local auxiliary is affiliated with the Texas Association of Healthcare Volunteers. The charter membership was a total of 81 persons.
The auxiliary is looking for women and men who are interested in volunteering three or more hours a week in the hospital or Legacy Beauty Shop. The rewards are knowing you made a difference in someone else’s world.
The purpose of our organization is to promote and advance the welfare of the Matagorda Regional Medical Center through ways approved by the Board of Managers of the Matagorda County Hospital District. This will be accomplished by supporting the hospital and its patients, and through fundraising in a manner satisfactory to the Board of Managers and in harmony with the planning of the community.
Some of our long range goals for our Auxiliary are to:
- Become aware of our Community needs, especially in the area of Medicine.
- Expand our membership
- Promote wellness within our community
Some of the many activities the Volunteers perform are:
- Back to School Scholarship program to persons seeking help in the Medical field.
- Operate the Gift Shop.
- Earnings are applied to purchases for a new hospital equipment.
- Transport patients in wheelchairs to departments or asset them out after their stay.
- Maintain two Information desks to assist visitors and patients.
- Maintain the beauty shop in the The Legacy Campus.
- Host monthly birthday parties at The Legacy Campus.

If you would like more information on becoming a volunteer, you are invited to 1) speak with any current member of the MRMC Auxiliary, 2) call the MRMC Human Resources Department, or 3) download this information packet (coming soon) and bring your completed application form to any Auxiliary member or MRMC administrative team member.
The Matagorda Regional Medical Center Auxiliary Volunteers are always ready to serve and assist you with any needs. They staff volunteers at the main lobby Information Desk and the Ambulatory Care Center Information Desk.

The Matagorda Regional Medical Center Auxiliary operates a Gift Shop located in the hospital lobby. The Gift Shop is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from Noon to 4 p.m. They offer a nice selection of gifts and plants for all occasions.

Monday, Tuesday & Thursday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Wednesday: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Friday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Saturday: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Year Ending 2010
The MRMC Auxiliary celebrated their 50th Anniversary in 2010 with a total membership of 97, which includes 74 active and 23 emeritus members. These Volunteers worked a total of 18,245 hours in 2010. They gained 14 new members and awarded 12 scholarships totaling $7,500.
The Gift Shop sales for 2010 were $124,143.24 up almost $35,700 from 2009. The Auxiliary graciously donated $26,768 to the MRMC Foundation for its capital campaign, golf tournament and popcorn sales.
