JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Clinical Laboratory Director, the Technical Specialist – Hematology is responsible for the effective coordination and supervision of all the functions in the Hematology laboratory section that includes the subsections of Coagulation and Urinalysis.

Conducts pretesting and processing samples (Pre­Analytic) stains and prepares slides of specimen material for microscopic examination and evaluation; prepares chemical solutions and reagents. Performs, analyzes, interprets, and confirms testing of samples (Analytic) using a wide variety of laboratory procedures requiring independent judgment and using both manual and automated methods in Hematology, Coagulation and Urinalysis; observes reactions and makes/records readings of test results; keeps clinical laboratory records in accordance with established procedures as defined by standards of Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA 88). Documents and delivers test results (Post­Analytic) verifies and finalizes test results, evaluates collected laboratory data, and produces and distributes test results.

In coordination with the Clinical Laboratory Director, supervises daily operations of the Hematology section, provides oversight and review of quality control, orders supplies, monitors analyzer maintenance and troubleshooting, technical procedure writing/revisions, equipment needs assessment, proficiency testing compliance and monitoring, quality improvement initiatives, knowledge/adherence to regulatory standards and specific projects. Assist in preparation for inspections by outside accrediting agencies, including College of American Pathologists (CAP), Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), and The Joint Commission. Acts as a technical resource and support person for planning, student education, continuing education, problem solving, and provides consultation, training and competency for staff, supervisors and pathologists. Coordinates specific ongoing projects for the laboratory under the indirect guidance of the Clinical Laboratory Director.

Provides quality customer service through ongoing interface and frequent communication with patients, physicians, hospital staff, and management. Implements change and fosters team building. Understands and contributes to the vision, mission, and goals of the Clinical Laboratory.

Duties may also include performance of procedures associated with procurement of specimens from patients or other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Biological, Physical or Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology or equivalent with registration as a Medical Technologist/ or equivalent; with current registration through one of the licensed agencies is preferred, and/or an equivalent combination of experience, education and with the eligibility for high complexity testing.[CLIA]§493.1489  Training and experience in moderate and high complexity testing required to assess and verify the validity of patient test results employing awareness of the factors that influence test results. Patient testing is performed by employee. All supportable educational documents and proof of registration must be presented and filed in personnel folder before any patient testing is performed. This documentation must be reviewed and approved by the Clinical Laboratory Director prior to patient testing.

 

  • An Associate’s degree in Medical Technology [CLIA] approved program with registration in H.E.W. as a MT.; [CLIA] §493.1489.  Training and experience in moderate and high complexity testing required to assess and verify the validity of patient test results employing awareness of the factors that influence test results. Patient testing is performed by employee.  All supportable educational documents and proof of registration must be presented and filed in personnel folder before in patient testing is performed. This documentation must be reviewed and approved by the Clinical Laboratory Director prior to patient testing.

 

  • High School Diploma with appropriate clinical training and documentation with registration in H.E.W. as a MT.; [CLIA] §493.1489.  Training and experience in moderate and high complexity testing required to assess and verify the validity of patient test results employing awareness of the factors that influence test results. Patient testing is performed by employee. All supportable educational documents and proof of registration must be presented and filed in personnel folder before in patient testing is performed. LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY:

Medical Technologist (MT) Certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent is required.
