Under the general supervision of the Medical Technologist/Technician, the Lab Assistant is responsible for performing preparatory portions of laboratory tests and assisting the technical/professional laboratory staff in completing analytical processes. Answers and routes technical inquiries and works to facilitate the throughput of STAT and inpatient workload in the assigned Laboratory areas, such as Chemistry, Hematology, Histology, or Microbiology. May participate in the technical process, including loading samples onto automated instrumentation and performing waived testing. Prepares slides, monitors and records refrigerators, freezers, and water baths temperatures, retrieves/moves specimens to/from long-term storage, assists in unpacking, loads and unloads samples and analyzers, and generates daily work lists.
Assists with orientation and training of other employees when requested. Lab Assistant will follow universal precautions on all duties of the job, follow the requirements and use proper techniques involved in the care and use of equipment. Will perform other duties as assigned or as needed, within reasonable expectations.
High School Graduate or equivalent. Prefer completion of a specialized phlebotomy training program or completion of a Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician (MLA/T) or Medical Assistant (MA) certification program.
Phlebotomy Technician Certification by ASCP (PBT) or AMT (PBT) or equivalent approved certifications is required.
Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician (MLA/T) or Medical Assistant (MA) certification is desired.
Minimum two years of successful laboratory experience in a complex hospital or clinical environment to include phlebotomy, data entry, problem solving, quality assurance, clerical and customer service responsibilities. An Associate’s Degree in a Science or equivalent coursework may substitute for experience.
