JOB SUMMARY

Performs moderately complex (journey-level) computer systems analysis work. Work involves analyzing and identifying system requirements, procedures, and problems to automate processing or to improve existing systems, and implementing designs using software programming languages. Works under general supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. The Systems Analyst job classification series is intended for employees that help agencies use computer technology effectively and efficiently by devising new ways to improve functionality of existing systems or networks and implementing new systems. Employees typically develop, implement, and test solutions to complex applications problems, perform systems management and integration, improve existing systems, and review system capabilities, workflow, and schedule limitations. Performs work involving the design, operation and/or maintenance of technology products, computerized information systems and sub-systems.

Level II Systems Analysts may also provide technical support to a business or an organization’s employees and train non-technical workers on the business’s information systems. They may design systems and assess the effectiveness of technology resources already in use or new systems that are being implemented. Additionally, they will determine the practicality of changes and modification of systems.

Level II Systems Analysts also work with external partners, including consultants, agencies and vendors, to arrive at the most appropriate system or integration of multiple systems. With information technology constantly changing, specialists must stay up-to-date on emerging technologies and the potential effectiveness of these advancements in their current system.

Employees at this level perform independently and typically serve as a resource for the department.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Two-year college/vocational technical degree in computer science, management information systems (MIS), information technology, OR an approved related degree, OR an approved information technology certificate; OR four years of experience as an operations analyst within the last eight years; OR an approved equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience in systems analysis and design work. Graduation from an accredited two- or four-year college or university with major coursework in computer science, computer information systems, management information systems, or a related field is generally preferred. Education and experience may be substituted for one another.
