Happy Birthdays: The next chapter in safe, coordinated care for our littlest patients.

For more than two decades, families in Matagorda County have trusted Dr. Gregory A. Pappas and the team at Matagorda Regional Medical Center’s Women’s Center to deliver healthy babies close to home. As Dr. Pappas transitions into a well-earned retirement, we want our community to know that our Women’s Center remains strong, capable, and deeply committed to serving expectant mothers right here at home.

“I’ve had the privilege of helping generations of Matagorda County families welcome their children into the world,” said Dr. Pappas. “Together, we’ve built a women’s program rooted in safety, teamwork, and a commitment to Matagorda County that will endure long after my departure. I want future and expectant mothers to know that you’re in excellent hands.”

Each year, over 400 babies are delivered at MRMC. While most arrive healthy and ready for their first “Happy Birthday,” our care model is intentionally designed for structured partnerships with Houston-based specialists and rapid transport when advanced care is needed. From expert care coordination during high-risk pregnancies to seamless neonatal transport for babies requiring specialized support, we strive to ensure every mother and newborn receives the right level of care at the right time. Safe deliveries happen here, and advanced resources are available within minutes when needed.

WHY LOCAL MATTERS

Matagorda County moms deliver babies in private labor and delivery suites carefully designed for comfort and privacy and equipped with the latest monitoring technology. With hundreds of births each year, our clinical teams have real, daily experience, and our nursing staff, certified in neonatal resuscitation and advanced cardiac life support, work alongside our physicians every single day.

There’s something irreplaceable about delivering your baby in your own community. When your family visits, they drive ten minutes, not two hours. When you need a follow-up appointment, you’re not navigating Houston traffic with a newborn. When questions arise at 2 AM, instead of calling a clinical team of strangers, you’re calling professionals who’ve been caring for Matagorda County families for years.

We also know that not every family will choose to deliver locally for many reasons ranging from personal preference to pregnancies requiring subspecialty resources from the start. But whatever you choose, we want you to know that your local MRMC care team is always here to help you make informed decisions about your care regardless of where that care happens.

HONORING THE LEGACY, BUILDING THE FUTURE

As Dr. Pappas transitions from active practice, he leaves behind more than a legacy. He leaves behind infrastructure, relationships, clinical protocols, and a medical team that learned from one of the best. We honor his contributions by continuing the work of welcoming new life with compassion, expertise, and the kind of personalized care that only happens in communities like ours.

“I’m grateful for the foundation we’ve built together,” Dr. Pappas said. “The Women’s Center remains focused on what matters most. Healthy moms, healthy babies, and expert care that feels personal because it is.”

If you’re expecting, considering starting a family, or simply need trusted women’s health services, we invite you to call the MRMC Women’s Center at (979) 241-3373 to schedule an appointment, meet our team, or tour the facilities.

We’re here. We’re ready. And we’re committed to serving Matagorda County families for generations to come.
